It is by an artisan whose work is extremely rare, often limited to editions of only 2 but much more rarely as editions of 1 (read MAKER paragraph below). This New England lady's dressing table (or lowboy) dates to C.
It has a one-board top with a molded lid mirroring drawers with molded edges. It has three drawers with the smaller one being in the middle. The apron (or skirt) is scalloped with cyma curves on the sides & each side of the front with a high gothic arch to the center & this is over inverted compressed cup turned legs ending in compressed bun feet with flared lower pads. The base has a cross bracket of serpentine stretchers with raised finial at the center which is very finely turned.
The delicate & beautiful brass teardrop pulls feature elegant "chased" escutcheons. It measures 2 & 15/16" tall X 3" wide X 1 & 7/8 deep. MAKER- Dominic Wilson, working under Abbey Miniatures, was an Episcopal priest & member of the Order of the Holy Cross, a monastic community of the Anglican Communion. He was at the Church Divinity School the Pacific, located in Berkeley, CA the year this was made. He served as spiritual director & lived in monastic residence operated jointly by his order & the Roman Catholic Camaldolese Benedictines. He began making miniatures in mid 1981 after a heart attack & emergency triple bypass surgery led him into convalescence & he found miniatures as a hobby & balm. After creating a large workshop, he began making exclusively 18th Century American pieces. He made limited editions of 12 until January of 1984 when boredom with repetition led him to begin to make editions of only 1 or 2 pieces (1 in the case of this piece). He attended 4-5 shows that year & spent about 4-6 hours a day working. All proceeds of his work went to further the work of the monastic community & the costs were paid by them, as he owned no possessions. He was a member of the IGMA, attended the school, became the president in 1985 & if memory serves me, someone from the IGMA told me he became a fellow & taught at the school (do write if I'm wrong). Pieces this limited by important early IGMA makers are extremely hard to come by.
You can see a lot of this info in the last three photos from the Miniature Collector #41 from 1984. CONDITION- There is no visible damage or issues, all looks great. All the drawers fit well & come in & out smoothly when you grab the pulls with tweezers but not so easily that they fall out when you tilt it forward. Note, this piece has only a hint of red, is like a gorgeous early american stain color, it's the flash that adds more.
